I've got 2 computers at home, plus my wife's laptop.

Once I finally got DSL, I started upgrading everything (I've been building my own computers for quite a while now - started by "upgrading" the first one - a 486DX266 - I bought from my last company, I think in the late 80's or early 90's, in about 93 or 94) so I could have a home network.

Well, to make a long story short (as my son Will would say "too late!"), I'm trying to find out why one computer is messed up, put a new widescreen LCD monitor on another, "talk" to my son Will in Iraq, and get all these computers working correctly , while still keeping FS & FW running. Rolling Eyes WHEW! Rolling Eyes

What kind of tech problems do YOU have?

Wow a 486DX266 .... you lucky thing. I could only afford a 386SX without the co-processor and running with 30pin SIPPS (the then alternative to SIMMs - using pins rather than a boardedge connection as we see on all SIMMS). I forget the speed but have a nasty feeling it was only 20Mhz .... very depressing esp. considering what you can buy these days for only half the price I had to pay ...... and I've still got the populated Motherboard somewhere

Got my latest machine going okay (FINALLY!), but having a bit of a problem with my network. While the network sees all the computers (2 are hard-wired, laptop is wireless), when you try to access shared folders, the files are "not available". I'm not great at network administration and don't know how to fix this problem. My biggest concern is ensuring all have access to the DSL router (they all DO have internet access), but it would be nice to be able to swap files between computers.

Are all the machines running the same OS (operating system)? Microsoft have historically always experienced issues getting differing OS's to sync properly - nothing a virtual lumphammer cannot fix though

Sounds a bit like an access rights problem. As a first pass make sure the administrator login password is the same for all machines and then attempt to access the shared files whilst logged in as administrator. the other thing that can sometimes occur is a file(s) may have managed to get set as accessable by only the owner (not even the administrator is allowed access in such a case). Choose two machines and do some access tests between the two to try and isolate the problem
