Got a favorite fantasy movie? If so, let us know which one and why it's your fave.
So far, I've got a few that rate way up there as favorites within all genres of filmdom.
My favorite fantasy movies are (as of my thoughts today - until I edit the list, anyway):
1. LOTR Trilogy - Extended DVD: I like eveything about the films - acting, sets, story (adaptation of a supreme classic, to say the least), cinematography, costumes, special effects - EVERYTHING! Each movie could have been 2 hours longer (or more) if they'd tried to get everything in the books on screen, but I think Jackson did a superlative job of bringing the essence of Tolkein's work to the screen. I hope it made all who have read the books read them again & I'm sure there will be hundreds of thousands of (especially) younger folks (<30) who will read something they never tried before. Let's hope it helped boost the FSF reading figures. I actually started my first elective reading forays with Jules Verne and H.G. Wells.
2. Willow: Only replaced by LOTR, this has everything fantasy should have.
3. The Princess Bride: I know, "The Things We Do for Love" was a 10cc song, and a lot of folks thought it was a "chick-flick", but all the elements are there. Yes, fantasy tales DO occasionally involve a love story.
4. Legend: The best "bad guy" role Tim Curry ever had. Again, fantasy characters galore (dwarfs, ogres, unicorns, demons, sprites, etc., etc.) and the hero combating "ultimate evil".
5. King Kong - Peter Jackson version: I think this is the difinitive version of the King Kong story and my main reason is because I saw Kong with a personality and a true relationship & bonding with the girl. While this was inferred in the earlier versions (I have all 3 on DVD - 1939, 1976 & 2005), the ability of CGI to give emotion to a character face (Kong) was a big key. Also, the time taken to build a relationship between the "beauty" and the "beast" made the movie longer in minutes, but not in time. Sound stupid to say that? Remember the last time you got engrossed enough in something that you forgot what time it was? That's what will happen if you read a great book, play an awesome video game, see an outstanding movie, or just have a great time at a party (even with no alcohol involved). Iknew the movie was long before I saw it, but it didn't seem that long watching it. Something must have worked! _________________ You can't always get what you want...

The Princess Bride
Wonderful story and humorous.
Edward Scissorhands
Quirky and strange. I love Tim Burton's movies.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Though I like all of the HP movies, this one is my favorite.
LOTR The Fellowship of the Ring
Same as with Harry Potter, I like the first one best.
Shrek
Cute and funny.
Donnie Darko
Interesting and surreal. I also thought it had a good message to it. |
